To clean your leather handbag, the first step is to inspect the bag and the manufacturer’s website for specific cleaning instructions and cleaning product suggestions. However, for most bags, you can use a mild soap solution to clean the bag. First, test any cleaning method in an inconspicuous place.  Begin by adding a few drops of mild soap to a bowl of warm water. Mix thoroughly. With a dry cloth, wipe off any surface dirt both inside and out.  Then dampen the cloth and work slowly to remove dirt and sanitize the bag. Be sure to wring the cloth out thoroughly so that it is only damp and rinse often.  Do not use this method for suede bags. Use the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning method. After wiping down the interior and exterior of the bag, allow it to completely dry before use. When dry, apply a leather conditioner and buff the leather to bring out the shine.

If the manufacturer recommends, dry cleaning your handbag is also an option.

 

If your purse has tough stains, such as ink or grease, you should consider having more expensive bags professionally cleaned to prevent further damage and increase the longevity of the purse. If the bag is inexpensive and you want to clean stains yourself, you can try using an alcohol based product such as rubbing alcohol or hairspray. Use a soft cloth or swab and gently rub the stain with it. Be careful when using alcohol products as they can damage the leather. Wipe dry with a cloth. 

 

After cleaning a grease stain, cornstarch can be sprinkled on the area. Allow it stand for several hours before wiping clean.

 

Products containing oils, waxes or silicones should be avoided when cleaning leather purses. They can destroy the leather’s finish. Eventually, this can lead to cracking.
